Eberhard Gwinner, co-ordinator of the Max-Planck node, is Director at the Max-Planck-Institute for Ornithology in Seewiesen/Andechs, Germany. He is a Fellow of the Academia Nazionale dei Lincei and a Scientific Member of the Max-Planck-Society His fields of expertise are biological rhythms, behavioural endocrinology and neurobiology, all with a strong link to ecology and evolutionary biology. In recent years, he and his group have concentrated on the temporal and spatial control of bird migration as well as the regulation of reproductive cycles in tropical birds, giving main contributions to these fields. He maintains collaborations with scientists all over the world. His present work concentrates on the anatomical, physiological and molecular identification of the circadian oscillator controlling nocturnal migratory activity in otherwise day-active birds with an emphasis on the role played by the pineal and its hormone melatonin in its regulation.
